About the Federal Office
Welcome to the Federal Office of Family Affairs and Civil Society Functions
Social commitment and social participation are essential pillars of life in our society. In order to promote this social cohesion, there are a variety of programmes, organisations and initiatives that are dedicated to the well-being of all of the people of Germany.
The Federal Office of Family Affairs and Civil Society Functions (BAFzA) is the heart of coordinated cooperation between the state and its citizens as well as associations, organisations and foundations. From volunteering to demographic change to youth policy issues and beyond, the employees of the Federal Office are competent contacts for all residents who want to play an active role in shaping our society. In sum: the BAFzA develops and supports components of social interaction and cooperation in Germany every single day.
The Federal Office of Family Affairs and Civil Society Functions is a multi-faceted service agency within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMBFSFJ). The tasks of the Federal Office are broadly diversified and range from the Federal Volunteer Service to various European Social Fund programmes and support services for programmes in the area of “Ageing and Care” to the federal programme “Live Democracy!”. In addition to the Federal service centre “Growing Together Campaign”, the service centre of the “Federal Programme for Multigenerational Homes” and the office of the Contergan Foundation for Disabled People, the BAFzA also manages the help hotlines “Violence against Women” and “Pregnant Women in Need”.

Recognising conscientious objectors is also one of the tasks of the Federal Office. The BAFzA also performs organisational tasks for the BMBFSFJ. This includes event management, visitor services and brochure distribution. The employees are present at events and information events and organise events throughout Germany for the entire business area of the ministry.
A wide variety of tasks, always close to its citizens: many of the BAFzA's approximately 1,500 employees work directly on site, in the field and in the training centres throughout Germany – reliably and competently.
